UK Companies Fight Laptop Theft

"ComputraceOne", a unique laptop monitoring and tracking service provided by Absolute Software, has recently enabled two major UK companies to recover stolen laptops.

In one case, when two employees of ITN News suffered laptop thefts - one from a car and one from the staff member's home - the ComputraceOne system allowed police to recover the laptops and bring charges against the two thieves.

The other company involved was BRC Reinforcement Solutions, certain of whose staff had the tracking system installed on their laptops. This resulted in a stolen machine being traced by Absolute Software's monitoring centre after it was switched on and connected to the Internet.

ComputraceOne tracks missing laptops using the Internet. When a laptop is reported stolen, the Computrace emits a silent signal to Absolute’s monitoring centre, providing information about the location of the device.

The system not only traces missing laptops but also has the capacity for remote deletion of sensitive material.
