Asus Eee Laptop for $200

Unveiled by Asustek recently at the Computex 2007 show is the Asus Eee PC 701 - a light booksize ultramobile PC retailing at around $200 or £100 although the price may differ when it reaches the UK, (launch date for UK/Europe yet to be announced).

This very compact laptop is geared towards mobile internet access which can be by Wi-Fi or by use of it's network port and an Ethernet cable. It is being claimed as the world's cheapest and easiest to use laptop. The "EEE" incidentally stands for "easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work".

The unit which weighs 31 ounces, is 8.8 inches by 6.5 inches, has a 7 inch colour display, full keyboard and 512MB of Ram memory. It is anticipated that eventually there will also be a 10 inch screen model expected to sell for around $300. The operating software is Linux but the laptop is also compatible with Windows XP. It offers a 15 second boot-up, comes with a built in microphone and stereo speakers and the battery life is 3 hours.
