12,000 Laptops Lost every Week At US Airports

Yes - around 12,000 a week - 637,000 a year ! These figures may sound incredible but this is what a survey commissioned by Dell has revealed.

Apparently more than 10,000 go missing at the major airports and another 2000 at the rest but the really amazing statistic is that only around a third of these are reclaimed.

The survey also looked at the question of sensitve information on laptops. Some 800 business travellers were surveyed and whilst just over half said they carried such data on their laptops, almost two thirds admitted not taking steps to protect the laptop when travelling.

Dell are using the survey to stress the importance of data protection and recovery products which is fine. However, if the huge numbers are correct it surely should not be difficult to reduce these losses significantly by travellers simply adopting a basic common sense attitude to protecting these valuable items.
