News - October 2007 30 Year Laptop Battery ? Scientists working in the USA may have come up with a new form of battery which could power Laptops and and simliar items for as long as 30 years without any recharge being necessary. The "Betavoltaic" power cells use the emission of beta particles produced during the decay of radioactive material in radioisotopes. The particles transform into electric power which could drive a Laptop computer for many years. The batteries do not use either fission or fusion to produce their energy and do not create any radioactive or other hazardous waste. What's more, when they reach the end of their long life, they are both inert and non-toxic so disposal should not present any environmental threat. Another advantage of the batteries is that the reaction utilised in their operation is non-thermal so that Laptops and other small devices powered by them will create less heat and run cooler than with traditional batteries. If development of the "Betavoltaics" progresses successfully they could be in use in 3 years time. But, before we get our hopes up too soon, there is a chance that this battery may be a hoax story.
